Obamacares?
Okay folks, it's been a while since I found myself inspired to write anything. You can't post this stuff to Facebook because all your friends will hide you from their news feeds. But I have to say, I'm crazy for Obamacare.
Ideology aside, America needs universal healthcare because it's too expensive to be sick. Here is a skull-splitting anecdote to prove my point...
Last summer a climber in Rocky Mountain National Park fell from a boulder and hit his head. The sound of his skull striking the rock was so loud it made everyone sick. The climber, after he fell, cried in a panic, "I can't feel my arms!" Shortly later, he proclaimed in a confusion "Thank God, I can see again!" Every person who witnessed this accident recommended an evacuation by helicopter since a two and a half mile hike at 10,000 feet of elevation with a concussion seemed crazy. "I don't have insurance!" he protested. Out of fear, no one forced the issue. Out of fear, the climber hiked out and never saw a doctor. Hopefully, this poor kid ended up okay. After all, he was twenty something and healthy.
So, to make my point, universal healthcare is important because without it, we run the risk of letting a twenty-something kid mismanage a concussion and risk death...all because we're afraid of how much it costs!
Here's the scoop on healthcare. Most of the provisions are popular, especially the famous ones like kids can stay on their parents' insurance until they're 26, insurance companies can't drop you when you get sick, they can't reject you for pre-existing conditions, they have to pay for preventive care, etc. The thing people hate about Obamacare is the individual mandate, which is the thing that pays for it all.
This is how the individual mandate works. In a large company, everyone shares the cost of insurance with the employer. Only a few people are sick at a time, and the money from the healthy pays for the sick. The lone, part time worker doesn't get this benefit because he doesn't share the risk with anyone. By forcing EVERYONE to buy insurance, the healthy people will pay for the sick people. This will drive down the cost of insurance, of doctors' fees, of hospital visits, of everything.
Why will this drive down the cost you ask? Because insurance companies will still profit from it.
Since more people are healthy than sick, the insurance companies take in more money than they give out. A very modern and unique part of Obamacare is going to be insurance exchanges. Each state will be required to create an exchange (probably most will do a website) and all the citizens of the state will be able to use the exchange to find healthcare. It works just like an employer, if a million people are in one place, and all of them are trying to buy healthcare, their risk is shared and profitable. AND, the insurance companies will try to compete for your business and beat their competition, thereby lowering the cost of their premiums.
So please, do your homework. And buy healthcare.
